Timothy F. Downey Sr., 73, Mattaponi, Navy vet, shipbuilder, died April 21
Timothy Franklin Downey Sr., 73, of Mattaponi, Virginia, a Navy veteran and retired master shipbuilder, passed away at home on April 21, 2025. He was born in Gary, Indiana, served four years in the Navy, and worked over 40 years at Newport News Shipbuilding. He is survived by his wife Deborah and family. A celebration of life will be announced later, and donations to the American Red Cross or blood donations are requested in lieu of flowers.

Nellie Boyd Crump, 92, of New Kent, passed away on April 24, 2025.
She was predeceased by her husband, Grosjean Graves “Dusty” Crump, Jr.
She is survived by her children G.G. Crump III, Catherine Hart, and Pamela Radwani, a brother Billy Boyd, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Born May 27, 1932, in Patrick County, she was a longtime member of Corinth Baptist Church and New Kent Chapel Memorial Association.
A visitation is scheduled for May 1, 2025, from 10 to 11 a.m. at New Kent Chapel Memorial Church, with a graveside service at 11:00 a.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to New Kent Chapel Memorial Association. -
Gertie Bernice Whiting, 89, of Charles City, passes away
Gertie Bernice Whiting, 89, of Charles City, lived a life centered on faith and family. Born May 12, 1935, she graduated from Ruthville High School and Smithdeal Massey Business College. She married Frank Whiting in 1960, adopted their son Michael, and shared a love for travel. She was cared for by family and staff in Williamsburg and is survived by extended family, joining her husband, son, parents, and siblings in eternal peace.

W&M resolution: Merit/values support for students/faculty, freedom
William & Mary’s Board of Visitors adopted a resolution Friday affirming “values-based and merit-based” support for students and faculty. The resolution, approved 14 to 2, states university programs comply with federal civil rights laws including the Equal Protection Clause and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The measure follows nationwide debate on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs in education and upholds the principle of academic freedom.
