Williamsburg City Manager Andrew O. Trivette has resigned after a decade of service to the city, including seven and a half years as its chief administrator.
City Council accepted Trivette’s resignation during a special meeting Wednesday morning, February 25. Deputy City Manager Michele Mixner DeWitt has been named interim city manager effective immediately.
The city characterized the departure as “a personnel matter” and declined to provide further details. Mayor Doug Pons did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
“City Council thanks Trivette for his service and dedication to the Williamsburg community over the past 10 years,” the city said in a statement.
Trivette’s Tenure
Trivette joined the City of Williamsburg in 2016 as assistant city manager after serving in a similar role in Bristol, Virginia. He was unanimously appointed city manager by Council in November 2018. He holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental science from the University of Virginia.
During his time leading the city, Trivette was credited with navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, establishing the Future Festival, and overseeing construction of new fire and police stations and the Greater Williamsburg Sports and Events Center.
As recently as February 13, Trivette was actively engaged in city business, presenting preliminary budget details at a City Council budget retreat. The current draft budget for fiscal year 2027 totals approximately $120 million — up from $103 million for the current fiscal year — with the largest proposed increases earmarked for employee raises (approximately $1.5 million), 14 new hires (approximately $1.2 million), and Williamsburg-James City County Schools (approximately $1.8 million).
Who Is Michele DeWitt?
DeWitt brings more than two decades of experience with the City of Williamsburg to the interim role. She was hired in 2005 as the city’s first economic development director, was promoted to assistant city manager in 2021, and became Trivette’s deputy in December 2025.
No timeline has been announced for a permanent city manager search.
